Messy minds of the messy Gen-Z

We as a generation- are enveloped in social media and technology that there is a pressure to be perfect and a well- rounded person. We are told to be special and unique like other teenagers. Ironic right? Straying away from technology; in school every day holds a different opportunity, but those opportunities are limited. We are required to learn maths for the future, history for the future, phonics for the future. It's not what we are learning, it's how we are learning. Dwelling into a textbook, and scribbling the facts on the paper, without using our own imagination is only helping us take one step.

In addition to this, is the pressure from the society. If you aren’t good at maths you are dumb, or if u don’t grow up to being a professor you have no where to go. Society once used to be people face to face telling what is wrong or right, which limited to about 100 people. Now society is the entire population. Wrongs and rights should be ones individuals call out and not a cluster of people who are behind a screen.

The screen is a barrier where messages are conveyed wrong and many messages are miscommunicated. Homework itself is online, even then work is misunderstood. How are we supposed to go further when there is a not so invisible barrier blocking us? Online school has had its pros and cons. Yes we are continuing our learning and still getting the knowledge we need, however the opportunities are taken for advantage. Time right now is unlimited, and there is time to work and study, however within this time, we are being sucked into technology, be it on our phones or on our computers. Not only is technology taking our time when on the screen, but also when we are not in front of a screen. We are sitting worrying about how many likes we got on our recent post, why we lost 1 follower. This is not only cluttering us with unnecessary content but also putting a pressure on being someone different.

It goes unnoticed how intertwined school and personal use technology works. Most kids themselves are on social media during class, being distracted from their work and the “real knowledge”.

We are told to be happy but we are still lost, and trying to make our way through life. With the constant pressure of the so-called society in addition to the school and parental pressure. Right now, instead of being happy, we should take out some time to ‘just be’ and live life to the fullest.

Here are some TEDx talks, which gave me insight. They sure are a great watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ad00XQ3JD0
